Cal Poly Humboldt women’s soccer won their third straight home game in the tight win over Biola University on Thursday. The Lumberjacks had taken a commanding two-goal lead in the 71st minute on a shot by freshman Morgan Young. The ‘Jacks survived a late push from the Eagles to win the game 4-3.

The youth movement of Humboldt continued as two of the goals were scored by freshmen and the other two came from sophomores. Joining Young on the action was fellow freshman Jysabella Tolentino. Sophomores Emma McChristie and Erin Mohr accounted for the other two. Frida Duran Arellano, another freshman, added two assists.

Next up for the Lumberjacks will be Azusa Pacific as they go on the road on Saturday. It will be an early match as the start time is scheduled for 10 a.m. in Chico.

The Eureka Loggers’ football team will be on the road Saturday night as they take on the Ukiah Wildcats. Eureka will look to keep their momentum going after starting the season off strong with a 30-0 performance against rival Arcata to open the season.

The Loggers had a bye week after their opener on Aug. 26, so they should be well prepared to take on a Ukiah team that has struggled out of the gate. The Wildcats are 0-2 after starting the season with losses to Montgomery and Northgate.

With a win, Eureka High could be undefeated heading into their matchup with crosstown rival St. Bernard’s on Sept. 16.

It was a rough start to conference play for Cal Poly Humboldt as they took a tough loss to Cal State East Bay on Thursday night. The Lumberjacks won the first two sets but dropped the final three in the 3-2 defeat. It was the third straight loss for the ‘Jacks who fell to 1-3.

It was still a promising showing for Humboldt against a Cal State East Bay team that has had an incredibly hot start to the season since losing their first game. The Pioneers have now won eight straight with the victory and improved to 8-1 for the season.

On Saturday, Cal Poly Humboldt will have another chance at home to get their first conference win as they take on Cal State San Marcos. The Cougars have had a difficult start to their season, as they’re at 1-7 and have lost five straight. It should provide a good opportunity for the Lumberjacks to bounce back before heading on the road for their next four games.
